YW girls camp: Hunger Camp

I usually blog about our fashion design toy Shailie®.  You can check out our web site if you have any girls.  Ultimate Christmas gift!

I just got back from camp and it was such fun, I thought I would share what we did.

So the theme/scripture was:
I shine because I know:
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.  Matthew 5:6

I read the scripture to the girls and then I welcomed them to Hunger Camp.  They screamed.

Each tent was a district.  There was a bag for each district with something hanging from it to help them survive Hunger Camp.  Here is what was hanging from the bag and what was inside each bag.

DISTRICT 1
SERVICE DISTRICT (camp lantern hanging from bag)

Inside bag:
1.  hats
2.  cartds and push pins for the Notice Board
3.  slap watches
4.  sign to post outside tent door
5.  service district responsibilities
responsibilities:  Each day post something you have noticed that is good about each girl.  Each girl in this district will do 15 random acts of kindness.  Wear you slap watch to remind you it is time to do service.

DISTRICT 2
COMMUNICATIONS DISTRICT (mega phone hanging from bag)

Inside bag:
1. hats
2. white board chalk
3.  clip board with daily agendas and how many kitchen helpers we needed each meal
4.  glasses (I got some cool Clark Kent glasses from Amazon)
5.  sign to post outside tent door
6.  communication district responsibilities

responsibilities:  Use the mega phone to make announcements and keep everyone informed.  Post the daily schedule on the white board.  Figure out who is helping with each meal.  Wear your glasses because you are knowledgeable and intelligent.  You will be easily recognized.

DISTRICT 3
CENTRAL DISTRICT (disposable cameras attached)

Inside bag:
1.  hats
2.  beauty supplies for hair and nails
3.  quotes for the THINK ABOUT  IT board
4.  fuzzy socks to keep them warm at night
5.  sign to post outside tent door
6.  central district responsibilities

responsibilities:  Post an interesting thought or scripture each day on the THINK ABOUT IT board.  (examples were included).  This district's job is to give manicures and provide beauty treatments to the young women in camp.  Each girls needs to feel special and beautiful.    Take pictures of everyone at camp.  You will be documenting the fun!  Wear your warm fuzzy socks at night to keep you warm.

We had the girls get the camp all set up (sleeping bags and tents) and then they could send a runner for their bag.

The Hunger Camp theme was great fun.  There was so much to work with.  When we would need a volunteer for something they would waive their hand and yell "I volunteer as tribute!"

So instead of parachutes appearing, we used balloons.   I used mylar but they didn't last so if anyone does this, just bring some balloons that you blow up and stick them on a stick or whatever.  The balloon would bring something to help them survive something at camp.  There would be a note attached and it was from the Advisor.  Here is what we did. They appeared at random times.  The girls loved them!

1st balloon.  Flowers with glitter center to wear on our hats to the "opening ceremony"
2nd balloon:  Chap stick to help them survive the hike
3rd balloon:  a necklace pen for the scavenger hunt
This hunt took about 45 minutes.  if anyone wants a copy of it I can post itl
4th balloon:  glow necklace for the last night

Everyone that did the scavenger hunt got a YW torch pin.  Like the mocking jay it is a symbol of taking a stand against evil.

For crafts we did duck tape pens.  I used the tutorial from Pioneer woman  http://thepioneerwoman.com/homeschooling/2011/09/duct-tape-flower-pencils/
I had 8 pens per girl and they did probably 4 or 5.  We also tie dyed a neck scarf.  The scarves were about 10 inches by 65 inches.  The stake leaders gave us a canvas bag for their goodies so we tie dyed that too.

My sister Laurel helped me make the hats.  We got the pattern from http://www.etsy.com/listing/82161436/cadet-cap-military-newsboy-hat-pdf
We had to adjust it a bit.  The hat band was too wide for us and made the hat stand too tall.
Laurel made the labels for me.  They turned out so cute!!

The most fun we had was doing a Flash Mob.  We did it to the FIREWORKS song by Katie Perry.  The girls practiced it a ton,  and every girl participated.  We had one in girl that refused to do it at the beginning, but she soon joined in and had the biggest grin when we performed it.  It was worth all the practices to have her join the group and have fun.

Happy camping!  I know I am glad it is over!!

  4. Omgosh so I'm doing same theme but calling it Girl on Fire like I've seen before. Did you have anyone in your ward question doing this theme? I was so excited about being camp director and several of the camp leaders thought it was too edgy! Anyways, I'm still going to do it because I know it will be awesome but was wondering if you had any conflicts. Thanks!

  5. Sorry, not camp leaders but young women leaders:). Also, for camp kick-off did you mention Katniss? Because of the people worrying about this theme I'm wondering what your approach was to presenting it? Thx!
